VW Scirocco GTS

Volkswagen Scirocco GTS

Cast your mind back 30 years ago to 1982's dayglo colours, high-tops and impossibly rampant hair, and you'll find the little Volkswagen Scirocco GTS. Fast forward back to 2012's dayglo colours, high-tops and impossibly rampant hair, and you'll find a new Volkswagen Scirocco GTS. And it is thus.

Built to celebrate 30 years since the original, this new GTS will debut at the Leipzig motor show. As a homage to its elderly predecessor, the new GTS gets coloured stripes running across the car, custom front and rear bumpers, exposed side sills, 18in ‘Thunder' alloy wheels painted in black, and a diffuser and roof-spoiler pinched from the Scirocco R.

Those reading that famous moniker as an indication of extra horses should look elsewhere; the GTS offers no extra power hike, and thus uses the familiar 2.0-litre turbocharged TSI petrol engine producing 207bhp. Which means a 0-62mph time of 6.9 seconds and top speed of 149mph. Would have been better with the 260bhp 'R' version, but at least you get a dimpled golf-ball gear lever knob.

Elsewhere at Leipzig, VW will showcase the CC R Line (new alloys, deeper side sills, bespoke bumpers), the Beetle Fender (400 Watt Fender audio system, 10 channel amp, ‘Sunburst' wood dash) and the CrossPolo ‘Urban White'. Of these four cars, only the Beetle Fender is expected to go on sale in the UK next year.
