Mercedes-Benz SL-Class SL50 Preview

Mercedes Benz SL500

Mercedes's new SL is one of those cars that immediately feels right. Nothing to assimilate, or acclimatise to, simply an immediacy that speaks of engineers looking pleased with themselves and a hell of a lot of boxes ticked. The art of the unobtrusively useful. Mind you, it should be pretty well honed by now - the SL is 60 years old. Merc's had some time to get the recipe right.

The mechanisms by which the SL has evolved aren't exactly witchcraft, but have that pleasingly practical feeling that means they'll add up to something positive. So, the structure is now pretty much all-aluminium, saving roughly 110kg over the basic bones of the old SL. Poring over the technical specs, there's everything from cold-cast aluminium bolt-in bits to extensive use of aluminium alloys, depending on location, load and function. Welding the damn thing together must be a nightmare. There's even a hint of magnesium (behind the fuel tank and in the roof frame); the only traditional high-strength steel components are inthe A-pillars for roll-over protection, should you manage to flip it.

Rigorous attention to fat-free detail pays dividends. Even though there's generally more kit, the 435bhp, V8 SL500 is 125kg lighter than the previous version all-up, and the 306bhp, V6 SL350 goes some way better by managing a generational weight loss of 140kg. You don't need to be a physics professor to work out the advantages: the SL500 will produce an entirely respectable (for this amount of performance) 31.0mpg and 212g/km of CO2 on the combined cycle, and the SL350 an impressive 41.5mpg and 159g/km of CO2. Decrease the weight, and you can have more performance in terms of speed or efficiency, depending on which takes priority.

VW Scirocco GTS

Volkswagen Scirocco GTS

Cast your mind back 30 years ago to 1982's dayglo colours, high-tops and impossibly rampant hair, and you'll find the little Volkswagen Scirocco GTS. Fast forward back to 2012's dayglo colours, high-tops and impossibly rampant hair, and you'll find a new Volkswagen Scirocco GTS. And it is thus.

Built to celebrate 30 years since the original, this new GTS will debut at the Leipzig motor show. As a homage to its elderly predecessor, the new GTS gets coloured stripes running across the car, custom front and rear bumpers, exposed side sills, 18in ‘Thunder' alloy wheels painted in black, and a diffuser and roof-spoiler pinched from the Scirocco R.

Those reading that famous moniker as an indication of extra horses should look elsewhere; the GTS offers no extra power hike, and thus uses the familiar 2.0-litre turbocharged TSI petrol engine producing 207bhp. Which means a 0-62mph time of 6.9 seconds and top speed of 149mph. Would have been better with the 260bhp 'R' version, but at least you get a dimpled golf-ball gear lever knob.

Elsewhere at Leipzig, VW will showcase the CC R Line (new alloys, deeper side sills, bespoke bumpers), the Beetle Fender (400 Watt Fender audio system, 10 channel amp, ‘Sunburst' wood dash) and the CrossPolo ‘Urban White'. Of these four cars, only the Beetle Fender is expected to go on sale in the UK next year.

Jaguar XJ Ultimate

Jaguar XJ Ultimate Front Three Quarters photo
Jaguar is stretching its limbs with the XJ Ultimate, the most luxurious and expensive model in its current portfolio. Based on the long wheelbase version, this car has been designed with passengers in mind. In the back there are fold-out iPads integrated into the front seats with wireless keyboards, and a table that rises and swivels out of the center console to reveal a set of glasses - an essential complement to the champagne cooler behind the armrest. But there's a bigger story here. Under the bonnet is a new 3.0-liter supercharged V6, available with either 340 hp or 380 hp. It's this engine that will power the new Jaguar F-Type Roadster when it arrives in production form later this year.

VW E-Bugster Cabriolet

The irony of this concept is that we've already seen undisguised spy shots of the production-ready Beetle Cabriolet, rendering it rather pointless. Still, it scraped into the Top 10 because it's such a damn fine thing to look at. Based on the E-Bugster concept shown at the Detroit show in January, but with the roof removed, this speedster version is propelled by the same 114-hp electric motor with batteries where the back seats should be. Don't expect to see an electric Beetle anytime soon, though -- the powertrain is just for show. But a two-seat Beetle with a chopped-down windscreen to sit alongside the four-seat Beetle Cabriolet is reportedly under consideration.

Porsche Cayenne GTS

Porsche Cayenne GTS Front Three Quarters photo

Sporty SUVs were the order of the day in Beijing, and Porsche took the opportunity to show off its new Cayenne GTS - a stiffer, lower, and faster take on the Cayenne S. The 4.8-liter V8 has been tweaked to produce 420 hp -- a 20 hp boost, and enough to send it from 0-62 mph in 5.7 seconds. Porsche's adaptive PASM suspension is fitted as standard, but lowered by about an inch for tighter body control and a squatter stance. Wider wheel arches, more prominent side skirts, and a unique roof spoiler all hint at the GTS' more dynamic character. And if you want to leave onlookers in absolutely zero doubt that you're driving the most overtly sporty model in the Cayenne range, you can opt for lime green paint.

Numero 9 is still a concept, but Citroen has confirmed that it previews one of three new DS models, including a small sedan and an SUV, designed initially for the Chinese market. It sat alongside an original DS on the stand and shares more than a hint of that car's elongated elegance. Although this model will attempt to lure buyers away the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7 Series, its proportions are unique. At around 193 inches, it's close to the length of a Porsche Panamera, but wider, much lower and with a longer wheelbase. It uses a plug-in hybrid powertrain with CO2 emissions of just 39 g/km. That's remarkable when you consider it has a total of 295 hp, thanks to a 225-hp, 1.6-liter turbocharged four driving the front wheels and a 70-hp electric motor, fueled by a lithium-ion battery pack, spinning the rears-hp electric motor, fueled by a lithium-ion battery pack, spinning the rears.

Ferrari's -Enzo engine

Ferrari's next Enzo engine

2013 Ferrari F12 Berlinetta Front Three Quarter photo
"It will be the fastest and the cleanest Ferrari ever," revealed Amedeo Felisa, Ferrari's CEO, at the Beijing show. We already knew the successor to the Enzo was going to be a hybrid, but now we know how it will work after seeing a model of the powertrain. It uses a reworked version of the F12 Berlinetta's 6.3-liter V-12 engine in combination with an electric motor attached to the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The result, according to Felisa, is 10 percent better performance and 40 percent lower CO2 emissions than a car powered only by the V-12. A full carbon-fiber chassis and bodywork, and more than 800 horsepower, should make for a Veyron-beating turn of speed.

BMW i8 Spyder

BMW I8 Spyder Front Three Quarters photo
The i8 Spyder concept serves two purposes: It previews a drop-top version of BMW's pioneering hybrid supercar, due in 2014, and gives us a glimpse at a more production-ready interior. A shorter wheelbase than the fixed-roof i8, and two seats instead of four help tighten up the proportions. The result is breathtaking. The body and chassis are still made of aluminium and carbon fiber, and power still comes from a 220-hp, 1.5-liter engine at the back and a 129-hp electric motor at the front, resulting in a 0-62 mph of fewer than 5 seconds, but the Spyder has an extra trick up its sleeve. Lift the rear deck, and concealed below are a pair of electric scooters, so you won't have to walk after you park.

Audi RS Q3 Concept

Audi RS Q3 Concept Front Three Quarter photo
It was only a matter of time before the RS badge adorned one of Audi's 'Q' family, and first in line is the Q3. The Audi RS Q3 concept follows a familiar RS formula by pumping up the styling and plumbing in an outrageous engine, sending power to all four wheels. In this case it's a development of the 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbocharged unit from the TT-RS and RS3, tuned to produce 360 hp. That's 20 hp more than any of its previous applications, and enough to power it from 0-62 mph in 5.2 seconds on to a top speed of 165 mph. Finished in matte Ordos blue with 20-inch wheels and splashes of color-coded carbon fiber, it looked seriously good on the stand. Audi says it's merely exploring the possibility of a production model, but reading between the lines, you should be able to buy one by next year.

Range Rover Special Edition - Victoria Beckham

2012 Range Rover Evoque Victoria Beckham Beijing Debut With VB photo
Land Rover's decision to sign up Spice Girl-turned-fashion-designer Victoria Beckham as a design consultant is one that must have had traditional Land Rover customers weeping into their beards. And we'd be inclined to agree, if this Evoque Special Edition weren't such a tastefully finished car. Limited to just 200 models globally and costing around $130,000, highlights include a matte gray exterior, rose gold trim on the 20-inch wheels and switchgear, and Vintage Tan leather with baseball stitching. Land Rover will even throw in a VB-designed purse and four-piece leather luggage set, in case you had any doubt who the target audience is.

Mercedes Concept Style Coupe Concept

Mercedes Benz Concept Style Coupe Concept Front Three Quarter photo
Mercedes made sure it was heard in Beijing by enlisting singer Jessie J to belt out a song at the reveal of its CSC concept. Essentially a scaled-down version of the CLS, this small four-door coupe is based on the same platform as the A- and B-Class, but is actually closer to the C-Class in terms of size. Mercedes' design team has pledged that only the essentials will be changed for production, so expect the swooping bodywork and A-Class-inspired interior to be faithfully reproduced. After it's revealed in production form at the Paris show in September, you'll be able to buy one within a year, for slightly less than an equivalent C-Class.

Lamborghini Urus

Lamborghini Urus
As the reception to Bentley's recent EXP 9F proved, making a good-looking SUV is a tricky proposition, but Lamborghini brought the show to its knees with the stunning Urus SUV concept. We spoke with the car's chief designer Filippo Perini, who all but confirmed this will make production in 2015.
Lamborghini Urus Concept At Beijing Show Rear Three Quarter photo
"This is very close to the finished product. The exterior is real but the interior is more like a concept. We wanted to show what we can do with carbon," Perini said. Lamborghini is staying quiet about the engine, but did say it will have more than 600 horsepower -- our hunch is a development of the Gallardo's V-10, but a V-8 is also a distinct possibility. An adjustable ride height will give it off-road ability, and the goal is to build around 3000 copies a year -- more than doubling Lamborghini's current output in one fell swoop.

Chevrolet Malibu 2013

Chevrolet Malibu 2013
2012 Chevrolet Malibu Passengers Side Rear photo

Chevy Malibu was GM's best-selling car last year. These days, there's no upside in describing how successful an automaker is in the truck and SUV business. Midsize and compact sedans, market share-wise, are where it's at, baby. GM has moved up the Chevy Malibu's launch twice, first from fall of '12 to mid-year, and the car has since been fast-tracked to a launch early next year, in January or February. It will join the Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, and Suzuki Kizashi in the midsize segment in abandoning V-6 engine options for four-cylinder models only.

2012 Chevrolet Malibu Front Profile photo

The new design has been in the works since before GM's 2009 bankruptcy, raising concerns it would age before its time. The 2008-'12 model was a breakout, a handsome, if conservative take on the midsize sedan segment with semi-formal sheetmetal that makes it look more expensive than it is.Chevy has done a credible job of following up the 2008-2012 Malibu, and that's no small thing. The current Malibu, along with the Cadillac CTS, was a turnaround car, a sign that GM could get its product act together even as its finances suffered.

Because the new Malibu is on the Epsilon II platform, and because the 2014 Impala will be built on a larger-wheelbase version of the platform, the Malibu loses 3.5 inches in wheelbase. It's now at 107.8 inches for the '13 model.2013 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ Interior photo

Volkswagen CC 2013

2013 Volkswagen CC Front Three Quarters
Volkswagen's CC is certainly an attractive sedan, but as it ages, it doesn't quite fit in with Volkswagen's latest design language. A facelift might be the key to solve that problem -- and that's just what the updated 2013 CC, which debuts later this month at the 2011 Los Angeles auto show, receives.

Other cosmetic tweaks are much more conservative. The CC gains new LED tail lamps with L-shaped optics resembling those used on the Passat, Jetta, Golf, and Eos, while the rear bumper fascia is massaged ever so slightly. Interior revisions are largely limited to new climate controls; sadly, the oh-so-sumptuous tri-tone interior scheme shown here is likely to remain a European-market exclusive.
VW has yet to release finalized specifications on the car, but officials tell us the new car won't mechanically differ much from the existing car. Expect most trims to utilize a 200-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4, mated either to a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The 280-hp, 3.6-liter VR6 will likely remain relegated to top-trim models, and paired only with a six-speed automatic and VW's 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.

2013 Cadillac XTS

2013 Cadillac XTS

2013 Cadillac XTSThe car is almost a dead ringer to the XTS Platinum concept from last year’s Detroit auto show. The production XTS retains the concept’s mesh grille and swept-back headlamp design, while gaining a tamer set of lower intakes, although it does use more chrome trim. Also softened is the sharp character line, which now terminates just before the cut for the back of the rear door. From what we can see, the taillights are identical to those from the concept, and the wheels – while smaller – are pretty close to what we saw last year.
