Vehicle Overview
The GL-Class lineup consists of the diesel GL350 Bluetec (formerly the GL320), available in all 50 states, and the gas GL450 and GL550. All GLs seat seven people in three rows of seats. The GL competes with the Acura MDX and BMW X5.
New for 2011
Changes include new head restraints for the second- and third-row seats that are designed to reduce whiplash potential and an inside mirror with an integrated compass. The GL550 has a restyled bumper, and a blind-spot detection system is available on all models. A new telematics system called "mbrace" is standard and offers new features such as using a smartphone to lock or unlock a vehicle remotely.
The interior of the GL-Class accommodates up to seven occupants in comfort with an exceptional level of spaciousness, creating the luxurious atmosphere you would expect from Mercedes-Benz - in this case comparable to the S-Class. For the "Grand Edition", Mercedes-Benz has refined the interior further, especially through the use of stylish materials. Exclusive appointments include two-tone seats (black/porcelain or black/maroon) in leather (or in nappa leather as an option) with a special piping design and contrasting stitching.
Likewise only available on the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class "Grand Edition" are door centre panels, armrests and dashboard instrument panel with double-lapped felling, as well as trim and a wood/leather steering wheel in black ash.
Other high-quality appointments: comfort headrests for the driver and front passenger, ambient lighting, roof liner in black designo fabric, velour floor mats with contrasting stitching and "Grand Edition" lettering, "Grand Edition" badge on the centre console, sports pedals in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs and door sill panels in stainless steel.
the 2011 GL-Class is comprised of premium wood and leather materials with heated front seats, and features a multimedia system with Bluetooth hands-free connectivity and Mercedes-Benz’s COMAND interface, which controls entertainment, climate and navigation settings. The GL350 Bluetec standard offerings include dual-zone automatic climate control, rear air-conditioning controls, heated eight-way power front seats, third-row power split-folding seatbacks and an eight-speaker stereo with in-dash six-CD changer.
Keyless start and heated/ventilated front seats are standard on the GL550, and a rear DVD entertainment system is optional. A Premium I package, standard on the GL550, adds a power tailgate, power-folding mirrors, a rearview camera, driver memory functions, auto-dimming driver-side and interior mirrors, and a hard-drive-based navigation system with voice controls.
Another impressive feature found in the 2011 GL-Class is Mercedes’ latest “mbrace” telematics system, which connects your vehicle to your iPhone or Blackberry. Features include stolen-vehicle tracking, crash notification, voice-guided navigation, a Mercedes Concierge who will make restaurant reservations, and many other useful applications.
Seating for seven is standard, along with a multimedia system featuring Bluetooth hands-free connectivity plus audio, video and navigation functions.

A restyled bumper highlights the exterior changes to the 2011 GL-Class, which also boasts trapezoidal tailpipes, chrome skid plates and either dual fog lights or LED daytime lights. The GL350 Bluetec sits on 20-inch wheels and offers a standard adaptive air suspension, sunroof, automatic headlights, roof rails, and automatic wipers. The GL450 sits on standard 19-inch wheels, while the GL550 features 21-inch wheels.
The exclusive front end of the "Grand Edition" is unmistakeable: dark-tinted headlamps, a radiator grille with black, high-gloss louvres and a redesigned front bumper with integrated LED daytime running lamps define the special model. Light-alloy wheels in himalayas grey metallic - with a high-sheen finish also available as an option - add further exclusivity. There are other visual highlights too, such as metallic paint finishes, heat-insulating and infrared-reflecting laminated glass all round, aluminium-look running boards with rubber studs, and separated exhaust tailpipe trim.
A raked hood imparts a sporty appearance that's augmented by muscular flared wheel arches. Twin power domes running the length of the hood recall similar cues in the company's classic 300SL Gullwing sports cars.

ENGINE
The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class "Grand Edition" models are equipped with PARKTRONIC and any one of the available engines. The V6 diesel engine in the GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC utilises highly efficient SCR exhaust gas technology, outputs 155 kW (211 hp) and delivers its maximum torque of 540 Newton metres at 1600 rpm. On average this engine consumes 9.0 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres. In the GL 350 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY, the V6 engine outputs 195 kW (265 hp) and generates torque of 620 Newton metres. It consumes 8.9 litres per 100 kilometres.
Superior power delivery and maximum smoothness are the particular benefits of the two petrol V8 models. These models also comply with the EU5 emissions standard. The 5.5-litre V8 engine in the GL 500 outputs 285 kW (388 hp) and delivers 530 Newton metres of torque. At 6.5 seconds, its acceleration time from a standstill to 100 km/h is almost worthy of a sports car. On the GL450, the V8 petrol engine has a displacement of 4.6 litres, outputs 250 kW (340 hp) and generates maximum torque of 460 Newton metres. It takes 7.2 seconds to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h.
Safety features in the 2011 GL-Class include a Pre-Safe collision-mitigation system, which tightens seatbelts and closes windows prior to impact as well as a Post-Safe system, which unlocks the doors and shuts down the engine and fuel system after an accident. Other standard safety technologies include side curtain airbags for all three rows, side-impact airbags for first and second rows, antilock brakes, and an electronic stability system. New head restraints for the second- and third-row help reduce whiplash potential, while a new blind-spot detection system is standard across the line.
Significant enhancements to safety, along with clean diesel technology, V-8 power and plenty of space for the kids or equipment make the 2011 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class SUV an attractive choice, inside and out.
