Carmaker Audi buys bikemaker Ducati for 1.12 billion USD

Audi buys Ducati for 1.12 billion USD
German luxury carmaker, Audi, has agreed to buy Italian bikemaker, Ducati, for a sum of 1.12 billion USD. Audi will also inherit all of Ducati’s current financial liabilities.

Volkswagen owned Audi were earlier negotiating with Ducati owner Investindustrial to buy out the Italian exotic bike maker, but it has now culminated to a deal. The marriage of the two automotive giants fits well with Audi’s ambitious ‘Project Eagle,’ aimed at elevating VW to becoming the world’s largest auto manufacturer.

Earlier, Andrea Bonomi, Investindustrial head had stated that Ducati was looking for a world class industrial partner for its future growth & wanted to sell the iconic brand for one billion Euros.

The purchase will make Ducati the 11th brand in VW’s portfolio. Ducati sold 42,000 motorcycles through 2011 & commands a nine percent share in its segment. The company has been making all the right moves over the past few years, launching segment leading motorcycles like its versatile Multistrada 1200, the Diavel power cruiser & 1199 Panigale race replica.

Ducati has unveiled the Monster Diesel.

Review and first ride of new Ducati monster

new ducati monster 795
Almost a quarter of a million Monsters have sold around the world since its 1993 introduction. So, how many of the next quarter of a million Monsters are to be powered by Ducati’s new Monster 795 for Asia? A quick ride brings us closer to the answer.

Ducati isn’t beating around the bush. The Monster might be the most affordable Ducati in Asian markets by a fair margin, but it’s still no less a Ducati by any yardstick. Instantly recognisable as a Monster, the 795 is manufactured in Bologna & assembled in Thailand, with stringent quality control ensuring it lives up to Ducati’s standards of quality  &  fit finish.

The 795 is a hybrid; a combination of two existing Monsters. The chassis of the entry level 696 offers convenience for shorter riders thanks to a lower seat height. Repositioned handlebars (sourced from India!) ease the forward lean ergonomics  &  the foot pegs are likewise repositioned. At the heart of the iconic motorcycle sits the 803cc, Desmodromic valve train equipped motor from the Monster 796. Ducati knows this combination is best suited for Asians  &  Indians. A double sided alloy swingarm helps keep costs competitive.

The lower seat makes shorter riders feel at home immediately,  &  the bike is furthermore manageable thanks to its 167kg weight. Wide handlebars provide good leverage,
and the V twin engine outputs a familiar Ducati throb with strong midrange grunt on tap. The Monster blasts to an indicated 94kph in first gear, 138kph throttle pinned to the stop in second while third is good for near 180kph. There’s no shortage of performance from this 87bhp powerplant. And the wholesome package of superb dynamics  &  potent brakes makes it effortless tapping into  &  getting to grips with the Ducati’s sporty genes on the right road.

The Monster 795 aims to be exciting  &  practical. While handling is light  &  easy, the engine sometimes feels snatchy at low speeds  &  prefers being left on the boil. And this could be a bit of an issue if you want your Monster to commute to work in Mumbai city traffic every day. Keep its engine revving high on the highways  &  now you’ve got a better idea of where the 795 can truly excel. Ride quality is pliant  &  capable of soaking in the bumps with a sporty firmness.  Despite its altered seating position however, the Monster is still not the most ideal long distance touring motorcycle, as its stance remains sporty  &  can extract a toll on an unfit lower back.

No, it may not feel quite at home in every surrounding, but the Monster 795 has its heart in the right place. Performance, styling  &  the India introductory Rs 5.99 lakh price tag make it pretty tempting. We hear this is just the first salvo fired towards India from Bologna & simply can’t wait for what’s next.

Triumph launches seven models for India

British motorcycle manufacturer Triumph has unveiled its Indian range at the Auto Expo. It is offering seven models starting at a tempting Rs. 5.5 lakh, and will join other iconic brands like Harley Davidson and Ducati in the fast-growing niche motorcycle segment of the Indian two-wheeler market.

The range starts with the legendary Bonneville, powered by an 865cc, air-cooled parallel twin in traditional Bonneville fashion. The Street Triple and Daytona 675 are powered by 675cc inline-three cylinder motors while the Speed Triple gets a bigger 1050cc mill. Out of the three, at Rs 5.75 lakh the Speed Triple is the cheapest of the lot, while you’ll have to shell Rs eight lakh for its bigger capacity sibling Street Triple.

While the Speed and Street Triples are projected as street bikes, globally the Daytona 675 is aimed at the Japanese’ inline-four 600s, which should give it an edge in the Indian Market as none of the Japanese big four currently have a supersports offering in their lineups. Priced at an extremely attractive Rs seven lakh, the Daytona should successfully be able to fill the current void existing between a street model and full-blown litre-class offerings in India.

The Tiger 800XC is a dual-purpose motorcycle, powered by an 800cc inline-three engine producing 95bhp, priced at Rs 11.4 lakh.

Two cruisers round up Triumph’s range – the ‘smaller’ of the two being the 1700cc Thunderbird Storm priced at Rs 17 lakh. The range-topping Rocket III is pure indulgence though, it’s powered by a 2300cc inline-three motor which at 22.5kgm, churns out more torque than a Honda Accord saloon and at Rs 22 lakh, costs about the same too. No second guessing what we’d pick then!

The range is expected to go on sale by mid-2012 and Triumph is planning to offer in-house financing options for its customers as well.

Ducati’s 2012 Superbikes unveiled

Ducati’s new supersports model line-up goes on sale early in 2012. Its eagerly anticipated flagship, the 1199, will sell in three variants, a base 1199 Panigale, the 1199 Panigale S and a 1199 Panigale S Tricolore, dressed in Italian red, white and green.
Expect the stunning, cutting-edge 1199 to rewrite the supersports rule books, being a race-bred machine that pushes the barriers in terms of style, features, technology, performance and handling.
Handsome, ultra-compact and sporty to the core, the 1199 uses full LED lighting and high definition, colour TFT instruments. The 1199 Panigale is to deploy the world’s most powerful twin-cylinder engine ever; a 1198cc, four-stroke, 90-degree L-twin, liquid-cooled powerhouse called the Superquadro, with Desmodromic valve operation. Power output is a tarmac-scorching 195bhp at 10750rpm, just under a 11500rpm rev ceiling, and this light-for-its-class motorcycle shows off a kerb weight of 188kg, making for a fearsome power-to-weight ratio of 1037bhp per tonne. A 13.5kgm of peak torque is developed at 9000rpm. A wet-type, slipper clutch is standard, as will be a 6-speed gearbox with quick shift assistance.
The 1199 Panigale rider can command a full variety of electronic rider aids, including a latest-generation Ducati Data Analyser (DDA+) system, Ducati Riding Modes with intelligent ABS incorporation, Ducati Electronic Suspension (DES), Ducati Traction Control (DTC), Ducati Quick Shift (DQS), Engine Brake Control (EBC) and Ride-by-Wire (RbW) throttle control.
Experts can slot into Race Riding mode to pilot the full complement of 195 untamed ponies via sharp throttle response, reduced traction control intervention and altered race-replica styled instruments. Sport Riding mode selection blunts a bit of the potent Superquadro’s razor edge, providing 195bhp with softened power delivery and higher traction control assistance, while the Wet Riding mode tames power to a smoothly laid down 120bhp, with maximum electronic assistance to help riders control their 1199.
The 1199 has revised ergonomics and ditches the Ducati traditional trellis frame in favour of a monocoque unit, bolting its engine in as a stressed member of the frame. A 39mm longer single side, alloy swingarm brace than on the 1198 is standard, increasing wheelbase to 1437mm, while promoting forward weight distribution. The 1199 Panigale is equipped with state-of-the-art electronic suspension front and rear and 330mm front disc brakes gripped by Brembo four-piston, monobloc calipers. An advanced ABS system is also at hand.
Completing Ducati’s 2012 superbike range are the 848 EVO and also the new 848 EVO Corse Special Edition which will offer enhanced electronics, better suspension and a stunning Corse exclusive livery. The 848 EVO uses a Testastretta Evoluzione engine with 6bhp more, outputting 140bhp at 10500rpm and 10kgm of peak torque made at 9750rpm. The 848 EVO Corse Special Edition packs in traction control and quick shift systems, Öhlins rear suspension and dual, 330mm front brake discs.
Ducati desperately needs to upgrade and improve its existing Indian sales and service wings to provide such a brilliant range of motorcycles the required support system. This will help it sustain itself in the increasingly important Indian two-wheeler market.

Affordable Ducati Monster for India

Affordable Ducati Monster for India

EXCLUSIVE!

Ducati’s first serious bid to tap into the booming Indian market is to happen this month itself, with launch of an affordable new Monster, the world’s best-known naked motorcycle.

Dubbed the 795, this new Monster will be priced significantly lower than the Monster 796, which is already available in India. As suggested by the name, the 795 retains all the 796’s Monster DNA, tweaked to play its new role, so bringing the brand within closer reach of Indian power bikers.

The 795 will benefit from lower import duties for being assembled at Ducati’s new Thailand plant that goes live shortly. However, don’t think of this as a cheap Ducati, for the 795 will retain complete Ducati quality standards in terms of design, engineering and performance.

The Thailand facility will be a Ducati assembly station, with motorcycles assembled here being designed and engineered in Italy, with every engine brought in from the Borgo Panigale factory, Bologna. Assembly of motorcycles in Thailand will be entrusted to Ducati-trained technicians and subject to the highest quality standards, with use of a majority of European components.

The L-twin, air-cooled and twin-valve engine is expected to sport shortstroke dimensions, a Desmodromic valve train, and perhaps lower power output than the 87bhp currently offered by the 796. Although torque and engine character will remain strong, we do hope Ducati is able to gear the new bike to suit our region – the 796 suffers tall gear ratios that make it less than ideal to ride in Indian conditions. Expect a trellis frame with a dual-side swingarm on the Monster 795 instead of the 796’s single-side swingarm.

The Monster 795 is rumoured to be unveiled alongside the Malaysian MotoGP, October 20-21, a fitting venue for this Asian market model. We speculate 795 pricing for India will slot in somewhere close to Rs 5 lakh when it reaches India by early 2012. While Ducati’s current dealer network is inadequate for our large country, the company does plan to add four new dealers within 2011, taking its total dealer strength to seven, with more in the pipeline.

The day Indian Ducatisti has been saving for is here. Watch this space for more.
