A 2014 Alfa Romeo MiTo is a front-wheel-drive premium-compact car that looms large in the storied brand’s long-delayed return to the U.S. market. Alfa Romeo is part of Italy’s Fiat Auto, which gained control of Chrysler Group LLC in the American automaker’s 2009 bankruptcy. As things stand now (September 2011), the MiTo is due to start U.S. sale in mid-2013 through the modest dealer network that was set up to retail the Fiat 500 minicar. It will be one of three Alfa models planned for American debuts that year. The others are a still-to-be-named compact SUV based on the next-generation Jeep Compass, and the striking 4C exotic sports car, a limited-edition, high-performance, rear/mid-engine 2-seater.
