2013 Chevrolet Malibu, shown at the New York International Auto Show, will be four-cylinders-only to save weight - no need to reinforce the engine compartment for the minority of six-cylinder engines sold. The mild hybrid Chevrolet Malibu Eco gets an electric motor-generator, a small lithium ion battery pack, regenerative braking, idle-stop functionality, and smooth underbody panels to cut wind resistance, and low-rolling-resistance tires.
Malibu engine is a 2.4-liter four using direct injection to produce 180 hp driven through a six-speed automatic. The motor system, called eAssist - no, it's not an OnStar emergency feature - adds another 20 hp.
